Former Race Across the World Contestant Sam Gardiner Dies After Car Crash

Gardiner

Former Race Across the World contestant Sam Gardiner has tragically passed away at the age of 24 following a car accident near Manchester earlier this week.

The incident occurred on Monday night when Sam’s vehicle left the A34 and rolled before landing on its side, according to Greater Manchester Police. He was the sole occupant of the car and was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.

Sam, a landscape gardener, rose to fame in 2020 when he appeared alongside his mother, Jo Gardiner, in the second series of the BBC’s Race Across the World. The mother-son duo traveled across South America, captivating audiences with their adventurous spirit and close bond. Though they were unable to complete the final leg after running out of funds, Sam later described the experience as “life-changing.”

A Life Full of Adventure and Love

In a heartfelt statement, Sam’s parents, Jo and Andrew Gardiner, expressed their devastation:

“Sam left us far too soon, and while words will never fully capture the light, joy, and energy he brought into our lives, we hold on to the memories that made him so special.”

They described him as “loyal, funny, and fiercely protective”—a young man who was “adored by his family.” The Race Across the World journey, they said, “opened Sam’s eyes to the wonder of adventure.”

“Pure Sunshine in Human Form”

Tributes have poured in from those who knew and loved Sam. His uncle, Jonny Gray, told the BBC:

“What you saw was what you got. Sam loved gardening, animals, and doing physical activity. He and Jo had a special relationship—they were an enormous hit on the show, and the public really loved them.”

Emon Choudhury, who won the same series of Race Across the World with his nephew Jamiul, shared an emotional tribute on social media, calling Sam “pure sunshine in human form.”

“His kindness was a beacon for anyone lucky enough to cross his path. Sam and Jo showed us what it truly means to live fully, love fiercely, and embrace every moment with an open heart.”

A Transformative Journey

BBC spokesperson for Race Across the World released a statement honoring Sam’s legacy:

“Everyone who worked with him and indeed everyone who watched Sam could see just how precious and transformative the trip was for both him and his mum, Jo. Sam embraced the seven-week trip with an energy, love, and determination that saw the pair enjoy adventures across Mexico to Argentina, making audiences fall in love with them.”

The statement extended “deepest condolences” to Sam’s parents, brothers (William and Charlie), stepmother (Justine), and all who knew him.

Final Days and Family’s Request for Privacy

Sam had recently been working on Scotland’s west coast before traveling to Stockport, Greater Manchester, to attend a family birthday celebration earlier this week. His uncle confirmed that the family is now requesting privacy as they grieve their devastating loss.

A Legacy of Joy and Adventure

Sam Gardiner’s untimely death has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him—both personally and through his television appearance. His infectious enthusiasm, love for life, and deep bond with his mother Jo made him a fan favorite and an inspiration to many.

As tributes continue to pour in, one thing is clear: Sam lived life to the fullest, embracing every adventure with an open heart. His memory will live on through the joy he brought to others.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
